Electric car sales increase significantly
The first month of 2019 has resulted in a substantially greater number of electric and hybrid registrations, with a 26.3 percent increase when compared to January of last year. The news comes from the latest figures that are released on a monthly basis by the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Despite less registrations being made this January than years previous – the sales of alternative fuel vehicles including hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric cars – grew to remarkable 6.8 percent of all vehicle sales. It has been forecast that this is just the start of a surgence in electric vehicle sales in the coming year.
In the SMMT UK new car registrations outlook, their analysts have predicted that this sector should rise by more than a quarter towards the end of 2019, for a total of around 177,000 vehicles. 86,00 of these units are predicted to be ultra low emission plug-in hybrids or battery electric vehicles.
Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said of the latest findings that: “It’s encouraging to see car registrations in January broadly on par with a year ago as the latest high tech models and deals attracted buyers into showrooms.”
